Chagan Lake - A Sacred Mongolian Legacy:
In the Mongolian language, Chagan Lake is known as Chagan Naoer, which translates to "White Holy Lake." This vast body of water, covering nearly 500 square kilometers, is situated in the western region of Jilin Province along the Songhua River. It boasts an impressive diversity of aquatic life, serving as a natural habitat for 68 different species of fish.
Of particular significance, Chagan Lake is the sole guardian of the oldest Mongolian fishing methods, with a history spanning over a millennium. The annual winter fishing festival commemorates this ancient tradition, where fishermen drill holes through thick ice and cast their nets beneath, just as their ancestors did over a thousand years ago. The unique skills and traditions of these local fishermen have earned a place among China's intangible cultural herities.
