Sun Island Ice and Snow Art Gallery

The Sun Island Ice and Snow Art Gallery (太阳岛冰雪艺术馆) is located within the Sun Island Scenic Area in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province. As the largest indoor ice and snow art museum in the world, it offers visitors the unique experience of enjoying exquisite ice sculptures and snow carvings year-round, regardless of the season outside. The gallery complements the Fantasy Ice and Snow Hall at Harbin Ice and Snow World, together embodying Harbin's reputation as the "world of ice and kingdom of snow."

Overview and History

The Ice and Snow Art Gallery first opened to the public on June 24, 2001, developed under the leadership of the Harbin Municipal Government. It underwent a major renovation and upgrade in 2022, with new ice and snow sculptures recreated starting in May 2023. The gallery has a total floor area of 5,000 square meters with an interior clear height of seven meters, and the cold zone covers 3,299.31 square meters. It uses approximately 8,000 cubic meters of ice and snow to create its exhibits, including 35 large-scale composite works and 102 individual pieces. The indoor temperature is maintained year-round between minus 5°C and minus 10°C, typically around minus 7°C, allowing visitors to experience a winter wonderland even in the heat of summer.

Themed Exhibition Zones

The gallery's exhibition is organized around nine themed zones that guide visitors through a narrative centered on the Sun Island mascots — "Little Stupid Bear" and "Dese Rat" — on their journey to challenge extreme cold around the world. The tour route extends over 200 meters, with a total viewing path of 800 meters.

The nine zones include: the Arctic Landscape Zone, featuring polar bears, Russian-style Red Square architecture, and matryoshka dolls; the European Continental Culture Zone, with a replica of the Roman Colosseum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the "Bocca della Verità" (Mouth of Truth); the International Music Culture Zone, blending ice pianos and giant musical note slides; the Antarctic Ice Peak Zone, showcasing penguins and expedition vehicles; the Underwater World Zone, with mermaids, jellyfish, and a replica of China's Jiaolong submersible; the Everest Base Camp Zone, featuring Jiayuguan Pass and Dunhuang flying apsaras; the Fine Ice Sculpture Competition Zone; the Entertainment Zone, with ice slides and photo walls featuring Harbin landmarks; and the Blessing Zone, centered on a Maitreya Buddha ice carving.

More recent themed areas include the Snow Origin Zone, which recreates the iconic 1963 snow sculpture "Renewal" from Harbin's first Ice Lantern Garden Party, and the Snowfall Fantasy Light Zone, inspired by the 19th Sun Island Snow Expo's "Niagara Falls" snow sculpture. The gallery is equipped with six snow-making machines capable of producing three cubic meters of artificial snow daily, creating a realistic falling snow effect throughout the visit. Interactive features such as ice skating and snow play areas add to the immersive experience, and the tour route features multiple panda ice sculptures at every turn.

A Year-Round Ice and Snow Experience

Unlike outdoor ice and snow attractions that are limited to winter, the Sun Island Ice and Snow Art Gallery operates year-round, with new displays designed and constructed each winter. The gallery opened for summer 2026 on July 4, offering visitors the chance to experience snowfall, ice sculptures, and snow carvings during the hottest months. The gallery draws inspiration from award-winning works of past Harbin International Snow Sculpture Art Expos, preserving their most brilliant moments and ensuring this ephemeral art form continues to enchant visitors through time.
