A New Landmark for Beer Lovers in Harbin

Harbin is known for its Russian architecture, ice festivals, and—perhaps most importantly—its deep love of beer. Now, there’s a new reason to visit Sun Island: the Modern Beer Museum, also known as the Madieer Beer Museum. Opened in June 2025, this museum brings together history, architecture, and craft beer in one unforgettable experience.

Housed in a beautifully preserved Russian-style building from the 1940s, the museum’s green-and-yellow facade and wooden porch immediately transport you back in time. But inside, you’ll discover a story that’s very much alive—one that spans more than a century of brewing tradition.

The Story Behind the Beer

The Modern brand began in 1906, when Russian entrepreneur Joseph Kaspé opened the Modern Hotel in Harbin. Its name, meaning “stylish” and “contemporary,” set the stage for a legacy of quality and innovation. In 1914, the Modern Bar opened its doors, offering over 90 international beverages and quickly becoming the heart of Harbin’s early beer culture.

At the museum, you’ll explore this rich history through:

  • Vintage photographs and artifacts that bring the past to life

  • Historical brewing equipment showcasing traditional methods

  • Storytelling displays highlighting key moments, from the iconic horse-drawn carts delivering fresh beer with sausages and pickled cucumbers to the birth of the Harbin International Beer Festival in 2002

Craft Beer Today: Innovation Meets Tradition

The museum doesn’t just look back—it also celebrates the present and future of craft beer. Since 2015, Modern has been crafting artisanal beers using traditional German techniques, and the museum features a dedicated craft beer display area where you can see the latest 2025 releases, including classic brews and flavorful cider beers.

Modern’s goal? To become the benchmark for Chinese craft beer. By combining century-old brewing expertise with bold new flavors, the brand is expanding across China—and the museum is the perfect place to taste that vision for yourself.
