Initiated and coordinated by Harbin Foreign Affairs Office, with the substantial support of Harbin Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism, Harbin Sun Island Group and the Canadian Quebec Provincial Government in Beijing Office, the snow sculpture "Bonhomme" of the Quebec Winter Carnival Ambassador made a perfect appearance at the Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Art Expo during the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival 2023. The snow sculpture is 10 meters high, 5 meters wide and 4 meters thick, with 200 cubic meters of snow. It had become a hot spot for tourists at its appearance.
Bonhomme first appeared in the 1st Canadian Quebec Winter Carnival in 1955. It is a vivid representative of the fearlessness, optimism and joy of Quebecers in the severe winter. Over the years, Bonhomme and the carnival it represents have become the most famous symbols of Quebec City. As the "King of Carnivals", Bonhomme acts as a carnival ambassador in Quebec and around the world, and it is also a heavyweight in the world's winter festivals.
The inauguration ceremony of the Bonhomme Snow Sculpture and related cultural tourism and economic and trade exchange activities are to be held in Harbin in February 2023 to promote the local friendly exchanges and cooperation between China and Canada, and also to help the construction of "Ice and Snow Culture Capital" in Harbin City and "Ice and Snow Economy" in Heilongjiang Province. Quebec Winter Carnival specially produced an animated short film about Bonhomme coming to Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival, which will be played in the interactive activity of the "Ice Palace" in the core scenic spot of the carnival in 2023 while being released on its social media platform to promote the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival.
Since February 2022, Harbin Foreign Affairs Office has overcome the adverse effects of the epidemic and actively promoted the cooperation between Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival and Quebec Winter Carnival. Bonhomme’s appearance in the form of snow sculpture at the Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Art Expo this time is another boutique project of "Ice and Snow Foreign Affairs" created by Harbin Foreign Affairs Office, which has become an extraordinary display of the joint cooperation of these two major winter festivals in the world, bringing more beauty to Harbin, the capital of ice and snow culture.
