On December, 28, 2022, the 21st Chagan Lake Winter Fishing Festival kicked off in Songyuan City, northeast China's Jilin Province on frozen Chagan Lake, one of China's largest, which is known for this centuries-old tradition.
The Mongolian fishermen there still use centuries-old techniques to catch fish from the frozen water. While such an old way of fishing helped our ancestors survive the brutal winter, this traditional custom has enriched not only culture but also people's livelihoods.
The traditional technique of boring holes by hand and placing nets beneath the ice to catch fish is listed as a national-level form of intangible cultural heritage.
The annual Chagan Lake Winter Fishing Festival lasts more than one month, it has become a golden business card of the local tourism these years.
